DESCRIPTION

The Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a qualified Junior Specialist in biochemistry and molecular biology for the 2017-208 academic year.

This position requires creative contributions to an active research program investigating topics relevant to the research area of molecular neurobiology. The candidate(s) will help to determine research goals for defined projects in regular consultation with the Principal Investigator. She/he will design and spearhead specific projects, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques, and will document and organize the results in preparation of scientific publications or grant proposals. The candidate(s) will work in the laboratory of Dr. David Wilson, and focus on the design and production of novel recombinant proteins and protein fragments that will be used in the generation and validation of novel monoclonal antibodies by the UC Davis/NIH NeuroMab Facility (neuromab.ucdavis.edu) and novel nanobodies in the laboratory of Dr. James Trimmer. Successful candidate(s) will also participate in protein characterization/quality control using a variety of techniques and should be able to work in close coordination with the monoclonal antibody and nanobody development groups. This position includes playing an extensive role in experimental design, in executing experiments with attention to detail, in interpreting results, and planning follow-up experiments, as well as trouble-shooting any experimental problems. General responsibilities include: optimization of E. coli cell culture, development/improvement/use of protein purification protocols, maintenance of DNA constructs and protein stocks and archives, and presentation and participation in group meetings. This position requires accurate and comprehensive documentation of results in databases which are critical for experiments that are downstream in the pipeline. The ability to train undergraduate assistants in various techniques is also important. The ideal candidate(s) will have strong logistical skills, be able to prioritize projects, make efficient use of time and have the ability to function relatively independently as a liaison between two different labs.
