Job Overview

 

The primary responsibility of the Consultation Psychiatrist includes providing psychiatric consultation and follow-up to patients in medical, surgical, and emergency room settings, and direct care for patients on the psychiatric unit (Psychiatric Medical Care Unit - PMCU) at Hahnemann University Hospital. This position offers the candidate an excellent opportunity to teach and supervise residents, medical students, and trainees from other training programs in Drexel University. The Consultation Psychiatrist is expected to actively lead or participate in activities or projects aimed to improve patient safety and quality of care at Hahnemann University Hospital.  

 

Qualifications

 

M.D. or D.O. with BC/BE in Psychiatry. Psychosomatic Fellowship training is not required but desirable. Ability to apply and maintain medical licensure in Pennsylvania. If Board eligible must become Board certified within 3 years of being hired or have specific approval from the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, Drexel University College of Medicine for contract renewal. Must be insurable through the Drexel University's professional liability insurance program  

 

Essential Functions

I. Serves as a consultation psychiatrist and attending psychiatrist for patients and their families at Hahnemann University Hospital. 
A. Provides direct clinical consultation services to patient in the HAHNEAMANN UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL and their families. 



1. Insures that services are provided in a timely and efficient manner. 



2. Insures that services are appropriate to patient need, both in quality and quantity 



3. Insures that medical records are completed according to the policies, procedures and regulations set by the Hahnemann University Hospital Medical Staff Bylaws and any of the regional and national regulatory and/or accrediting bodies. 



4. Insures that information required for billing for professional services is forwarded in a timely and accurate manner to the Drexel University Physicians' billing office in the Department of Psychiatry. 



B. Provides consultation to physicians and non-physician staff providing clinical services to patients at the Hahnemann University Hospital.



C. Insures that the amount of service provided and the system for reporting information for 
billing purposes meets the clinical productivity target for the fiscal year. 



D. Participates in continuous quality improvement program for Hahnemann University Hospital and implements quality assurance studies on the consultation services. 



E. Participates and complies with the Tenet Quality Management Program and, through supervision, insures compliance of residents and other trainees on the rotating on the consultation service.



F. Provides direct patient care and/or cross-coverage other faculty for the PMCU 



G. Provides on-call coverage for weekends and holidays in rotation with other attending psychiatrists, Provides back-up calls for the residents 



H. All clinical services rendered are to be services that are part of the Drexel University Physicians Practice Plan (DUP). 



1) All services must be billed through the DUP and revenues collected subject to agreed upon plans for disbursement. 



2) Providers must be compliant with all DUP policies, rules and regulations, including the DUP quality management program. 



I. Responds to all consultation requests by discussing the consult with the attending physician requesting the consult. After completing a consultation, discusses findings and recommendation with the attending physician and members of the treatment team including nursing staff 


II. Participates in the clinical and didactic educational programs for undergraduate medical students assigned to consultation and/or PMCU service 

A. Supervises medical students
B. Provides didactic seminars to 3rd and 4th year students 
C. Complete evaluations on time 
III. Participates in the clinical and didactic training program for residents in the general psychiatry training program assigned to consultation and/or PMCU rotation 



A. Supervises residents on clinical cases including case load for each resident to ensure that residents meet the training requirements consistent with the goals and objectives outlined in the Residency Training Program Manual. 


B. Lectures in the didactic lecture and seminar series

C. Provides individual supervision per the assignment by the Residency Training Program Director. 


D. Conducts Clinical Skills Verification (CSV) for Psychiatry Residents 


E. Complete evaluations for residents on time 

V. Participates in the clinical and didactic training program for trainees in non-psychiatry departments who rotate through the Consultation service and/or PMCU service. 

A. Supervises non-psychiatric residents 


B. Provides didactic lectures and seminars 


C. Work with Psychiatry Residents to provide clinical supervision for mid-level trainees from Physician Assistant and Nurse Practioner Programs  

 

Supplemental Position Information

VI. Participates in the development and implementation of research. 



A. May develop research protocols, collect pilot data and apply for extramural funding. 



B. Works with other members of the faculty and staff in order to facilitate the development and implementation of research in the Department of Psychiatry 



VII. Maintains confidentiality of workplace information according to the policies and procedures of the institution and the stipulations of federal and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania especially with highly confidential information. 



VIII. Performs other duties that may be assigned by the Director of Consultation Service and/or 
Department Chair of Psychiatry.
