DESCRIPTION

 

The Department of Neurosurgery (http://neurosurgery.ucsd.edu) pursues a tripartite mission of innovative research, education, and service in a highly diverse environment. The Department and the School of Medicine at UC San Diego are committed to academic, scientific, and clinical excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The Department of Neurosurgery invites applications for the role of Department Chair.

 

UC San Diego was established in 1960 as an integral part of the University of California system. From the outset, it emphasized educating the next generation of California scientists and engineers. The School of Medicine was established in 1968. Like its parent university, the school has placed a high standard upon linking basic and clinical discovery with outstanding, advanced methods for delivering compassionate care to patients. At present, UC San Diego can boast national and international accolades for the excellence of its clinical and research missions; its School of Medicine consistently ranks among the Top 10 in research funding. UC San Diego Health ranks in the top tier of academic hospitals and health systems, and has dedicated beautiful, new inpatient and outpatient spaces to neurological diseases.

 

The UC San Diego Department of Neurosurgery has a large and diverse faculty of more than 20 full-time academicians and 14 residents. The Department’s specialty divisions embrace a culture of academic excellence and diversity coupled with innovation and collaboration, and it is a vibrant component of a highly regarded university that offers over 200 degrees for the 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students. UC San Diego ranks consistently among the top NIH/NSF-funded institutions, with collaborative affiliations to regional research centers, including The Scripps Research Institute, The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute.

 

Since its inception in June 1971, UC San Diego Neurosurgery has been at the forefront of innovation in medical education, research, and clinical care. The Department is actively involved with continuing medical education for neurosurgeons, locally, nationally, and internationally. In addition, the Department has developed productive research programs in a wide variety of fields. It has been a major contributor to the Center for the Future of Surgery (CFS) as a Level 1 ACS Accredited Education Institute of Surgery, offering medical simulation training with animals, cadavers, surgical simulators, and robotic devices. Housed in the state-of-the-art Medical Education and Telemedicine (MET) Building on the UC San Diego Medical campus, the CFS is dedicated to educating students and surgeons, as well as developing new operating room equipment, procedures, and techniques.

 

Description

 

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Dean, School of Medicine (VC/Dean) and the CEO of the Health System, the Chair will be responsible for the Department’s overall management, academic planning, budget, personnel, resource allocation, and programs. In collaboration with the Department of Neurosciences, the Chair will take a leading role in establishing the UC San Diego Neuro Institute. The Chair will also play major role in the planning and development of the CFS’s new microsurgery and angiography suite. Sufficient infrastructural support will be provided to allow the Chair to continue a clinical practice as a leader.

 

UC San Diego seeks candidates whose leadership capabilities and experience, teaching, research, and/or community service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to excellence. As with similar roles, the Chair is expected to abide by UC San Diego’s Guidelines for Department Chairs Duties, including in the areas of faculty recruitment, diversity, service, and other policies and regulations.

 

Required Qualifications

 

• Outstanding academic record with experience as a senior administrator in an academic medical center environment, including experience in academic planning, budget, personnel, resource allocation, and program development.
• Personal record of distinguished scholarly, research (basic and/or translational), and/or clinical accomplishments in neurosurgery or a related field.
• Leadership capabilities and experience, teaching, research, and/or community service.
• Strong commitment to clinical care, research, teaching, and public service.
• History of fostering career development for early and mid-stage neurosurgeons.
• Ability to play a lead role to establish the UC San Diego Neuro Institute.
• Ability to lead the planning and development of the Center for Future Surgery’s new microsurgery and angiography suite.
• Ability to represent credibly, reliably, effectively, and tactfully the VC/Dean to campus and external constituencies.
• Ability to qualify for appointment as an Associate or Full Professor at UC San Diego.
• Medical doctoral degree and certification required to practice medicine in the state of California.
• Certification from the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
• Eligible for a California Medical License.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

• Demonstrated leadership in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as a commitment to advancing these principles within the Department and the School.

 

Appointment

 

This position will have a standard term of five years with annual performance review and goal setting. A formal committee review that includes an external referee occurs every fifth year.

 

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales. Review of applications will commence on February 25, 2017 and continue until the position is filled.
