Job Summary

 

Position Overview

 

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan is seeking a full-time, tenure track faculty member who has expertise in perinatal, infant, and/or early childhood mental health (i.e., pregnancy up to child age 5). The successful candidate will have substantial expertise in both research relevant to this developmental period as well as clinical service delivery to high risk, vulnerable families with young children. The ideal candidate will also have a substantial research portfolio in this domain with evidence of an ability to garner independent research funding and oversee clinical trials.

 

Responsibilities will include facilitation of and participation in University academic and clinical training programs relevant to perinatal, infant and early childhood mental health. Our program includes faculty with strong interests in basic and translational research in areas that include trauma, stress and adversity; intergenerational transmission of risk; health promotion, prevention and intervention with vulnerable families; and collaborative models that include an emphasis on engaging the participation of communities in order to expand and improve access and utilization of mental health treatment. The faculty member will also participate as a full member in a vibrant and highly collaborative research and clinical team. This position will report through the Program Directors for the Women and Infants Mental Health Program.

 

Clinical Activities

 

The faculty member will spend approximately 15-20% of his/her time in clinical care. An additional 15-20% of his/her time will be spent providing leadership for integrated behavioral health initiatives. Finally, 60-70% of the faculty member’s time might be spent in funded research. The candidate will also provide some hospital-based services, entailing participation in various on-call activities, which may include scheduled weekend rounding on the inpatient unit (averages 2 times per year) and backing up PES residents on call (6-7 nights per year).

 

Educational Activities

 

The successful candidate will serve as on-site/directly available outpatient supervisor and preceptor for psychiatry house staff, medical students, and/or psychology postdoctoral fellows, and provide didactic lectures for primary care and specialty care colleagues, medical students, general psychiatry residents, child psychiatry fellows, and a broad range of health professionals and trainees (i.e; social work, psychology, pharmacy, nursing, etc.). The applicant will be welcomed and expected to share their expertise in core curriculum development/delivery, medical student teaching, Journal Clubs, Evidence-Based Medicine Seminars, and Grand Rounds.

 

Administration

 

The successful candidate will be expected to attend Faculty Meetings within the Department of Psychiatry, at minimum this will include Academic Staff, All-Staff, discipline-specific team meetings, and/or other administrative meetings deemed necessary by their reporting supervisor. In addition to timely attention to pertinent administrative work (e.g., electronic medical record and in-basket monitoring, phone calls, letters, records, e-mails, etc.), the new faculty member will participate in all relevant quality improvement initiatives and activities.

 

Required Qualifications

 

Applicants must hold MD and/or PhD or equivalent and is required. Possession of a current license to practice medicine or clinical psychology in the State of Michigan is necessary. Applicant must be board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry or Psychology. Applicants must have demonstrated promise for an academic career that emphasizes research, clinical care, teaching and administration. Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary and be an active member in good standing of the University of Michigan Medical Staff.
