Position description

The Department of Neurology at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, is recruiting for a full-time faculty member in the In-Residence series at the Assistant Professor rank in the field of neurodevelopmental disorders, genetics and genomics, gene therapy and epigenome editing. Faculty in this series are expected to engage in teaching, independent research and creative work, demonstrate professional competence and activity, and provide University and public service.

Expectations:
The successful candidate will have a promising program of research in the area of genetic neurological disorders and studying methods in which to modify the epigenome for therapeutic development. The candidate will not only demonstrate excellence in this research area but also be able to teach courses in field to graduate and medical students, residents, and fellows. The candidate will be expected to utilize both animal models of disease in addition to patient-derived or engineered human cell lines, including iPSC. The candidate should have a focus on both X chromosomal disorders as well as haploinsufficient disorders. The candidate appointment will be in Neurology with the lab housed under the Cell and Gene Therapy initiatives underway at the Stem Cell Program and Gene Therapy Center. The candidate will be expected to collaborate with other in the regenerative medicine space and participate in collaborative projects submitted to both the NIH and CIRM.

• Define and lead research projects.
• Develop and write advanced experimental protocols.
• Prepare, organize and communicate research results through publication and presentations.
• Participate in appropriate professional societies and educational organizations, including taking a leadership role in organizations.
• Participate in service on research review boards.
• Three years of productive postdoctoral fellowship or equivalent experience.
• Provide service to department, school and campus committees.
• Ability to foster collegiality and work collaboratively in a diverse environment.
• Ability to adhere to University policies and procedures.

This recruitment is conducted at the assistant rank. The resulting hire will be at the assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• M.D., Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree
• An outstanding record of research creativity, independence, and productivity
• Demonstrated ability to establish and sustain extramurally funded research programs
• Strong research skills and interest in genetic neurological disorders and in translation
• Teaching experience at the graduate level
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively as a teacher
• Demonstrated experience with AAV cloning and packaging. lentiviral cloning and production, use of CRISPR for gene regulation, processing of omic datasets (including transcriptomics and whole genome methylation), In vivo epigenetic editing, and iPSC modeling including differentiation into neuronal stem cell, neurons (2D and 3D)

Preferred qualifications

Three years of productive postdoctoral fellowship or equivalent experience
